Lebanon protests

Lebanon protests ثوره

Abida Rahmani

Encountered peaceful protests of Lebanon at many places while we traveled far and wide . Mostly youths carrying Lebanese flags , chanting slogans, beating drums and dancing around , its a fun to watch.
On our last night decided with my friends to go to independence Square Beirut . As we reached there was a festive or carnival type of atmosphere, people having sheesha, selling food and having fun. On one side a group of people beating drums ,band pipes & dancing on the tunes .The main cause of protests in Lebanon is corruption by government and elites, they have private jets, overseas bank accounts and opulent lifestyles. There’s shortage of electricity, clean drinking water and jobs. Other factors are recession, sectarianism, unemployment, influx of Syrian refugees which are now 25% of the total population. And above all failure of the government to find solution to the economic crisis and provision of basic services to the people.
A civil engineer student stated that resignation of Saad  Hariri is not a solution, we want the whole government should go and fresh elections should be done. While our taxi driver was against these issues and unrest. The tourism has gone to a low level which is a major source of economy.
As we came close to candlelight vigil around few pictures of shaheeds. A man with hard face sitting across was the father of one shaheed. As I investigated from him learned that the boys were killed in a dispute by someone close to them and he is arrested.
He asked us about our origin and told us that he knew ZA Bhutto and his daughter.
Wish that Lebanese get a fair solution to all these efforts!
